dia de los muertos

on view: November 4 - December 16, 2017

celebration and opening: Nov 4, 5 - 8 pm

For the 14th consecutive year, AAC is proud to present the Día de Los Muertos exhibition and event. Join us for this FREE family-friendly celebration featuring art activities, face painting, traditional dance performances by Ballet Folklorico Mi Herencia Mexicana, and live music by Los Gaiteros Sanguashington. Complimentary Mexican hot chocolate and pan de muertos will be served and there will be food trucks on site.

This year, Minnesota-based artist Luis Fitch will display his Drawing Blood series along with a site specific installation to commemorate the dead and remind the living of their own mortality. Artists Edgar Reyes and Robin Bell will be working collaboratively to produce a two-night only projection on the building's facade. Edgar Reyes is a Baltimore-based artist who is best known for large-scale installations often created in collaboration with the community. His works frequently highlight inequality and call for social justice. Similarly, Robin Bell, a DC-based artist, is best known for his ambitious and socially-minded projections onto buildings and hotels.

“Mourning was not allowed because it was believed the tears would make the spirits path treacherous and slippery. This day is a joyous occasion; it’s a time to gather with everyone in your family, those alive and those dead.”

— Hayes Lavis
